چکیده

SUMMARY We present the results of a shear wave splitting analysis performed on teleseismic SK(K)S and direct S recordings 68 temporary broad-band stations to investigate mantle deformation northern side Arabia–Eurasia collision zone in NW Iran. used Reference Station Technique overcome potential contamination from source-side anisotropy signals. This method enabled us expand our measurement database beyond usual phases. The average delay time over entire region was found be 1.14 ± 0.42 s for 1.36 0.26 wave. In most parts study area, fast polarization directions both phases are consistent show uniform NE–SW direction with an 36° 37° wave-derived results, respectively. is close agreement absolute plate motion vector Iran (N39°E). associated neither surface geological trends, nor geodetic strain fields. propose that observed mainly controlled by LPO fabric developed due shearing asthenospheric layer response lithosphere relative deeper mantle. Only narrow near tectonic boundaries central Alborz, NW–SE oriented tend align major structures. Fast obtained indicate significantly smoother variations same regions mostly continue aligned direction. attribute these differences change structure boundary zone. western margins possess strong deformational as evidenced active strike-slip zones there. Considering depth extent this expands relatively mantle, it can locally influence waves, other hand, have larger footprint therefore region, phases, influenced more strongly their angles incidence, which station parameters.

Complex seismic anisotropy at the border of a very low velocity province at the base of the Earth’s mantle

[1] We constrain the anisotropy associated with a very low velocity province (VLVP) at the base of the Earth’s mantle using the SKS and SKKS waves sampling the region. Our selected high-quality data sets consist of 415 SKS and 111 SKKS waveforms for 127 deep earthquakes recorded at distances between 90 and 150 by the seismic stations in three temporary broadband PASSCAL seismic arrays: the Kaap...

Lowermost mantle anisotropy beneath the northwestern Pacific: Evidence from PcS, ScS, SKS, and SKKS phases

[1] In this study, we utilize data from broadband seismic stations of the Japanese F-net network to investigate anisotropic structure in the lowermost mantle beneath the northwestern Pacific. The comparison of shear wave splitting from phases that have similar paths in the upper mantle but different paths in the lowermost mantle, such as PcS/ScS or SKS/SKKS, can yield constraints on anisotropy ...

Evaluating Contributions to SK K S Splitting from Lower Mantle Anisotropy: A Case Study from Station DBIC, Côte D’Ivoire

Measurements of seismic anisotropy constitute a very important tool for examining patterns of flow and mineral properties in the Earth’s mantle. A popular strategy for gaining insight into upper mantle processes is to examine the splitting of SK(K)S phases and interpret them in terms of upper mantle anisotropy and deformation; in such studies, any contribution to splitting from anisotropy in th...
